CHAP. IV.

 

子曰、吾十有五而志于學。

공자가 말하기를, ‘내 나이 열다섯에 배우고자 하는 마음을 가졌고

三十而立。

서른에 바로 섰으며

At thirty, I stood firm.

At thirty, I took my stand

 

四十而不惑。

마흔에는 무엇에도 흔들림이 없었으니

At forty, I had no doubts.

At forty, I came to be free from doubts.

 

五十而知天命。

오십에 이르러는 하늘의 뜻을 알게 되었고

At fifty, I knew the decrees of Heaven.

At fifty, I understood the Decree of Heaven;

 

六十而耳順。

예순이 되어서는 귀에 거슬리는 것이 없었으며

At sixty, my ear was an obedient organ for the reception of truth.

At sixty, my ear was attuned;

 

七十而從心所欲、不踰矩。

일흔이 되자 마침내 마음이 하고자 하는 대로 하여도 법도에 어긋남이 없게 되었다.

At seventy, I could follow what my heart desired, without transgressing what was right.'

At seventy, I followed my heart’s desire without overstepping the line.’

'At seventy, I could follow my desires without overstepping the bounds; I could live this spontaneous real life, and yet a proper and moral life.'
